Antonelli claims Silverstone pole as rivals face mysterious speed issues

Kimi Antonelli capped off his impressive form at Silverstone by taking pole position for the British Grand Prix. Having already won the sprint race earlier in the day, the young Mercedes driver proved untouchable in qualifying as well. Navigating the high-speed corners with comfort and composure, a sharp final lap placed him firmly at the top of the timesheets, well clear of the competition.

Saturday proved far less fortunate for teammate George Russell, marking another setback in his title battle with Antonelli. After an earlier sprint victory that had extended his championship lead, Russell now faces a challenge. His qualifying session began disastrously with a first-lap crash caused by a lock-up. Although he returned after repairs, he trailed Antonelli and struggled with an inexplicable loss of straight-line speed.

Other top drivers were equally baffled by their cars' performance. Max Verstappen reported a worrying lack of straight-line speed, an issue that persisted throughout the session and made the car difficult to drive. Last year's winner Lando Norris described a 'tricky situation' for McLaren, citing a lack of downforce and excess drag. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc regained confidence in his Ferrari, qualifying a strong second in a welcome boost after a series of difficult races.

Lewis Hamilton completed the top three, though he admitted to being less than satisfied with third place. The Brit had succumbed to the charging Antonelli in the sprint race earlier in the day. At Racing Bulls, Isack Hadjar put in a strong qualifying performance, outqualifying teammate Liam Lawson for the first time since May. Alpine's Pierre Gasly was hit with a three-place grid penalty, dropping him to 15th on the grid after impeding Lance Stroll.
