Verstappen praises Hadjar after crucial tow secures front-row spot

Max Verstappen secured a front-row grid position for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix. This excellent qualifying result did not come without help, as the reigning world champion admitted afterwards, offering specific praise for the efforts of teammate Isack Hadjar.
Verstappen spoke highly of Hadjar's contribution after the session, explaining that his teammate provided him with "a tow and a half" during the decisive qualifying run. The Dutchman stressed that without this strategic support, he most likely would not have been able to secure his coveted spot on the front row. Naturally, the effect of such a slipstream along the long straights of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is of vital importance.
A tow is the aerodynamic benefit a car receives by driving directly behind another vehicle, significantly reducing drag. This principle allows the trailing driver to reach higher top speeds, particularly on straights such as Eau Rouge and Kemmel Straight. In Formula 1 qualifying, it is a proven and often essential tactic for snatching precious tenths of a second.
For Isack Hadjar, qualifying held a completely different meaning than for his teammate. The young driver knew well in advance that he would start Sunday's race from the back of the grid, a fate entirely unrelated to his performance on track.
The primary reason for Hadjar's grid penalty was a series of necessary power unit component changes. He had several new parts fitted, including the complete engine, the turbocharger, and the exhaust system. Because these replacements exceeded the permitted quota for the current Formula 1 season, an automatic penalty ensued.
Given Hadjar's predetermined starting position at the back of the grid, his role in qualifying was optimized for the overall team result. His willingness to offer Verstappen an aerodynamic advantage was a deliberate and tactical decision, enabling the team to maximize its qualifying potential despite Hadjar's penalty.
