Silverstone is renowned for its lightning-fast, flowing layout, a firm favorite among drivers and fans alike. However, this iconic circuit, a true litmus test for Formula 1 machinery, promises to be a very different experience in 2026. Criticism from the paddock is growing louder regarding the upcoming generation of cars and their impact on such legendary tracks.
These concerns are not new and were recently vividly expressed by Max Verstappen. Following a simulator session with the future car for Silverstone, the Dutchman reacted with total disbelief; by his own account, he even had to laugh. He shares this sense of surprise, and perhaps disappointment, with other colleagues on the grid.
One of them is Fernando Alonso, who likewise made his misgivings public. According to the Spaniard, driving at Silverstone in the 2026 cars will simply 'not be fun'. His remark underscores the growing fear that the track's characteristic speed and spectacle will be lost.
The root of the issue lies in the energy requirements of the new cars. These technical adjustments, aimed at sustainability and efficiency, are expected to significantly affect performance through high-speed sections. This threatens to undermine the unique challenges and enjoyment of circuits like Silverstone.
