The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has confirmed that it will not lodge an appeal against the five-second time penalty handed to Kimi Antonelli during the recent British Grand Prix. This pragmatic decision stems from the fact that the Italian F1 championship leader finished the race at Silverstone well outside the points, meaning any potential protest would make zero difference to his tally in the standings.
Antonelli, who was locked in a fierce battle for victory early in the race, was running comfortably in second place. Furthermore, he possessed a substantial tire advantage over leader Charles Leclerc, suggesting an attack in the closing stages of the race was well within reach. The young star seemed set to reaffirm his dominant form as championship leader with a strong performance.
However, the tide turned dramatically when Antonelli unexpectedly suffered severe steering issues on his Mercedes W17. This uncooperative car forced the team to pit him twice for emergency stops in an effort to rectify the problems.
