F1 2026: Spa-Francorchamps faces a completely different challenge

Current Formula 1 cars, heavily driven by battery technology, have already had a noticeable impact on the driving experience at several legendary circuits this season. Yet experts and drivers expect nowhere will the transformation be as striking as at the beloved Spa-Francorchamps, a track traditionally praised for its unique challenges.
With a circuit measuring over seven kilometers where relatively little heavy braking is required, the current car places different demands on drivers. The specific characteristics of hybrid power units, which rely heavily on electrical energy, require an approach that affects the classic racing experience at venues like Spa.
Opinion across the paddock is divided on how this shift will affect Spa's overall charm. Some drivers fear the track will 'no longer offer the same challenge' as before, while others view it as an 'interesting exercise' in adaptation.
To mitigate the impact to some extent, several measures have already been proposed. Ideas include restricting energy deployment and introducing additional active aerodynamics zones, all in an effort to preserve the essence of the fast Belgian circuit.
